8:00 pm Millar and Spencer: Jazz Duo

Playing together for a number of years, Ian Millar and Dominic Spencer play melodic improvisations on Jazz standards and originals.

Based in Edinburgh, the duo has regularly and extensively toured rural Scotland, bringing jazz to small communities in intimate settings. The beautiful Scottish scenery that they have seen on their travels has inspired the writing of many pieces of music - their latest CD is called “The Isle of Skye”.

Their style of jazz concentrates on developing melodic ideas within the framework of a tune whilst maintaining the concept and groove behind it. The result is a very accessible, melodic style which allows them to explore, improvise and develop ideas without losing the essence of the piece.

The Basement will become a smoky 1920′s jazz bar, complete with themed cocktails, a designated ‘Speakeasy’ and suitable accompanying playlists.

‘…expect warm, intelligent, reflective, human music…’

8:00 pm Edinburgh Comedy Preview: Gareth Richards and WitTank

We have two fantastic acts performing at The Firestation before they embark on their Edinburgh runs.  This promises to be a night of talented performances, laughter and general silliness.

Gareth Richards: Introvert – Never Been To Disneyland

Join Gareth Richards, 2010 Fosters Edinburgh Comedy Award Best Newcomer nominee for his brand new show of jokes and songs about being an introvert stuck in an extrovert’s world. Gareth’s parents could not afford to take the whole family to Disneyland, so they went without him. Gareth has never recovered, always feeling that he has been shut outside of life’s theme park.

“His material has a delicious otherworldly quality.”**** (Chortle).

“A delightful hour of comedy” The Guardian.

“He’s a quietly clever craftsman with a big future” (Bruce Dessau, Evening Standard).

WitTank

Like a battering ram to the funny-bone, stars of BBC3’s ‘Live at The Electric’ rocket back to the Fringe with a lavish parade of inventive characters and sketch magnificence. Hotly tipped as ones to watch for the future, why not catch them now, in the present?

8:00 pm The Songs of Leonard Cohen

Keith James in Concert: The Songs of Leonard Cohen.
Each song stripped back - desolate, naked and sensual

Revered by the entire music community; Cohen’s sense of prose and wry humour wrestle with the unspoken, forgiving human frailty with the brush of each line. His recent world tour has been successful beyond belief but has not, with regret, exposed the solitary inner strength of the songs in their original form.

Keith James, with a reputation of performing in this exact way, having an undying love of the pure song, gives you this; a concert of amazing material in the most intimate way imaginable. Also included are Poems by Federico Garcia Lorca and Leonard Cohen that Keith has set to music.

‘Certainly the UK’s most celebrated and evocative interpreter of golden music’ -The Guardian

‘Some of the most atmospheric and emotive music you will ever hear’  The Independent

‘Keith James has become a pillar of trust. A sublimely intimate and engaging voice’  Sunday Times

‘a sensitive and pleasingly understated delivery, all the better that the songs might speak for themselves’  Acoustic Magazine

8:00 pm The Tin Violin

The life of the violinist and composer Joseph Emidy is one of the most extraordinary of modern times. Born in Guinea, West Africa in 1775, at the height of European colonialism, Emidy was first captured as a slave by the Portugese, then kidnapped by the British Navy, serving as a fiddler on The Indefatigable during the French wars. Landing at Falmouth, Cornwall and being presented with a magical violin made by an illiterate miner, Emidy became a musical genius of the early nineteenth century.

Boy Josh finds himself embarking on a thrilling journey through worlds familiar and unknown. His epic adventure demands a resistance against the most savage of oppression before he finds freedom and love in music and song. On the way, he meets sailors, gabbling Cornish fools, crazy fishermen and a woman who softly plays the strings of his heart.

Funny, tragic and compelling, the play offers an extraordinary parable of humanity thatraises questions about identity, belongings and place, and also turns upside-down preconceived ideas about West Britain and the continent of Africa. Rich with dialect, dance and decadence, this play will make you jig your heart out…

8:00 pm Selah! D'or feat John Gordillo

The Firestation continues its monthly comedy night, Selah! D’or this season: with even more comics at each night and some very recognizable faces, this is a great night not to be missed!

John Gordillo with Special Guests Isy Suttie, Guy Manners, Pat Cahill and MC Iszi Lawrence

John Gordillo is a Perrier Award-nominated English director and comedian who has directed shows by Eddie Izzard and Reginald D. Hunter. John is an expert performer with amazing talent, passion and intellect.

Isy Suttie is probably best known for playing Dobby  - the IT geek - in Channel 4′s Peep Show. Isy is also an acclaimed live performer, with two sell-out Edinburgh runs to her name. Guy Manners’ upbeat anacdotes come from his unique personal experiences which, amongst other things, include: being a single man working in the beauty industry, and having a gay father and brother.
